Trick of the month : Variable speed drive?
When a variable speed drive is used as a final control element, it is essential to verify its configuration (new drives have more than 200 parameters). For example if a variable speed pump is controlling a flow, the most important parameters to verify are:
- Low speed limit; should be the minimum speed ensuring that the pressure is sufficient to obtain a flow; if the minimum speed is too low, at low controller output, the flow will remain zero (cycling at low controller output).
- Torque/Speed characteristic; to ensure that the speed control remains stable over all the range.
- Maximum current; if that parameter is too low, quick changes and high speed will be limited and the loop response will be different.
- Acceleration/Deceleration; if too low, loop reponse will be different for small changes and large changes.
Configuring properly the parameters in the variable speed drive ios important, however, tuning the loop will require some precaution… next month Top News will explain briefly how to do it.
