You decided to optimize an area in your plant. Where should you start?
The first question to ask is whether you have tools in place. If so, you can get a ROI within days…
-Alarm management:
Look for low hanging fruits for quick benefits. You can accomplish a lot within one week or two. Usually, 80% of problems are caused by few alarms. After, in the medium or long run, you will have to rationalize your alarms.
-Control performance monitoring:
Easily pinpoint loops that are not used, i.e. saturated loops, loops that are not in service, and loops on which operators have to intervene continuously. These problems can be fixed in days.
Identify loops that are not performing: Start with oscillatory loops (usually the ones with the biggest indexes are the ones that cause problems); then look at loops whose variability or absolute error is above benchmarks. Looking at 5 to 10 loops (the ones having the most impact) would probably be sufficient.
Diagnose: Look at loops on which stiction or tuning problems have been identified.
-Optimization:
