When Should You Use Feedforward?

Feedforward is useful when a disturbance that has a large impact on performance can be measured. Indeed, if the disturbance can be measured or inferred, its impact can be added to the controller output and the output can be manipulated immediately so that the process variable does not move away from the set point. For example, if the level in a reservoir is controlled by a valve changing the outflow, we know that we should change the outflow each time the inflow changes. Without feedforward, the level will change and the controller will manipulate the outflow. With feedforward, the inflow change will be immediately added to the controller output so that the outflow changes; the controller will never be aware of the change and the level will not move.
If a flowmeter is already present, the cost of adding feedforward consists of the time needed to configure the output addition and determine exact parameters.
Do not hesitate to contact us; we can help you do this or train your personnel to do it.
