When Do We Need Cascade Control?
A cascade scheme is needed when a loop can replace a valve so that local and fast disturbances are rejected by an inner loop. For example, if the temperature in a heat exchanger is controlled by a valve changing the coolant flow, the use of a flow control loop instead of a valve will increase performance when a disturbance (e.g. pressure change) occurs in the coolant system. Without cascade control, the temperature of the product in the heat exchanger will change when the coolant system's pressure changes, and the controller will manipulate the valve to compensate… With cascade control, the flow control loop will quickly compensate to maintain the flow, and the temperature will not change.
If a flowmeter is already in place, the cost of adding cascade control consists of the time needed to program the cascade scheme in the DCS, plus the time needed to tune both loops.
Another benefit of cascade control is that all non-linearities related to the coolant flow are embedded in the fast loop and thus have very limited impact on performance.
