When Should We Add More Complex Control Strategies?

We need more complex control strategies when a simple PID loop does not perform sufficiently well.

For example:

  • When disturbances are not rejected quickly enough
  • When variability is too high even after optimisation
  • When loops must be put in manual mode for start-ups
  • When many grades are produced or raw material properties vary
  • When many loops interact
  • When operators have to manipulate set points for economic reasons
  • When operators have to manipulate process parameters (SP, mode, control strategies) frequently
  • When performances are not maximized
  • When the process is strongly non-linear
