Sampling
To analyze oscillation problems, signals have to be sampled fast enough: sampling has to be faster than phenomena.
If a loop is tuned aggressively, oscillations will be present; the period will be a multiple
of dead time (~2 to 5). If oscillations are coming from a valve problem, the period will be in the
same order of magnitude or slower. Mechanical problems in a process can generate faster cycling.
Also, it is essential to remove all forms of data compression: report by exception, compression, special sampling.
Rule of thumb: sampling time
dead time
Suggested sampling time:
- Flow, Pressure
1s - Consistency
3s - Temperature, Level
20s - Analysis
60s
