Trick for this month : Heat exchanger control
Tuning a temperature loop on a heat exchanger could be tricky.
For example, consider a simple liquid-liquid heat exchanger heating soup using hot water. The soup temperature controller manipulates the hot water flow to maintain temperature soup at set point.
- This is a non-linear process (even with an equal percentage valve).
- The same change in hot water flow will produce a larger temperature change at low soup flow.
- The dynamic will also change with soup flow.
- At low soup flow, dead time and time constant will increase.
- Therefore, the tuning parameters should be adapted with the soup flow.
Feedforward measuring the soup flow and multiplying (Lead/Lag will be used) the output to the valve is also an interesting approach. Finally using a hot water flow controller in a cascade scheme will also improve performances.
