Trick of the month : Period of the ocsillations
When a control loop oscillates, it is possible to determine if the oscillations come from the loop itself or from the process. Indeed, if one places the loop in manual mode and that the oscillations persist, those extremely probably come from the process or of another loop, unless the positioner is the cause.
Where the oscillations come from?
If the period is 24h, there is high probability that the temperature (sunning) external is in question.
If the period is a multiple (hours or minutes, e.g. 5 min) it is probable that a timer is in cause
(for example for counter-current cleaning) particularly if the form of oscillations is rather square or a peak.
Finally, the period of the oscillations is also a guide as for their origin, for example summarily:
- very short period of a few milliseconds, mechanical problem
- period of a few seconds, flow or pressure loop
- period of a few minutes, level or temperature loop
- etc.
