Trick
Is the tank too small?
Before investing to replace or modify a tank, some questions should be answered…
- What is the role of the tank?
- Mixing tank
- Buffer tank between two units
- Reservoir
- Accumulator
Is the capacity sufficient (nominal and maximum flow)?
o Mixing tank
What is the residence time? Is mixing adequate? Could we improve control strategies?o Buffer tank
- Between minimum and maximum level, accordingly to actual PID tuning parameters, is worst disturbance rejected?
- If tuning parameters were modified, would it be better?
- Could we improve control strategies?
o Reservoir
- Could we reduce make-up?
- Could we improve control strategies?
o Accumulator
- With actual feedrate fluctuation, is the reserve sufficient?
- Could we improve control strategies?
Answering those questions and calculating values will lead to economies and performance improvements. Rarely the final solution will be to modify or replace the tank.
Optimization is a very good investment! Usually, within few weeks, money invested is recovered.
