Measuring Quality Performance

A good index to measure quality is variability of the error (setpoint - measurement).

For example, if variability is low, then units fed by this product will receive less disturbances and will also have a low variability.

After optimizing a unit, we must select 3 or 4 indices to quickly detect performance degradation and react immediately.

For example, after optimization is completed (control strategies, control loops, automation, and operation), monitoring variability is an excellent performance index.

The figure below shows a trend of variability for a density control loop representing quality of a product; low variability means quality and stability. If variability is low, then following units will also have higher quality. After optimization, variability is a lot lower and right on benchmark.

Optimization is a very good investment! Usually, within few weeks, money invested is recovered.
