How to measure impacts of optimization?
After optimizing an area or a unit, we should evaluate results to calculate ROI (return on investment).
This can be done using historical data and/or using control performance monitoring tools. Selected KPIs (key performance indices) should evaluate :
• Agility, reaction to load change or grade changes; for example
o Settling time
o Off specification product during changes.
• Stability, control quality; for example
o Overall oscillation index for all loops
• Control systems usage; for example
o Service time (%)
o Time not in saturation (%)
• Performance, overall result; for example
o Variability
o IAE (integral of absolute error) or average absolute error
o Off specification product quantity or percentage of time
Optimization is a very good investment! Usually, within few weeks, money invested is recovered.
