How long to reject a disturbance?
Is it possible to estimate easily the settling time?
Control systems (DCSs and PLCs) maintain process measurement close to set-point for each loop. For example, in a pressure loop, the controller compares measurement and set-point; depending on that error, the controller manipulates the control element to bring back measurement to set-point.
To estimate the settling time, only the dead time is needed. Dead time corresponds to amount of time elapsed after a controller output change, before measurement detects a change, in manual or automatic mode.
The setting time corresponds to approximately ten times the dead time.
tsettling ~ 10 Ÿ xtdead time
It is useless to retune the loop to obtain faster results… this simple equation will give you what you can expect.
